A Dynamical Model of Orographic Rainfall
نویسنده
چکیده
A dynamical model for orographic rainfall with particular reference to the Western Ghats is presented. The model assumes a saturated atmosphere with pseudo-adiabatic lapse rate and is based on linearized equations. The rainfall, as computed from the theoretical model, is in good agreement, both in intensity and in distribution, with the observed rainfall on the windward side of the mountain. The model cannot explain the rainfall distribution on the lee side, which apparently is not due to the orography considered in the model. A simple formula for rainfall intensity has also been found based on continuity of mass and continuity of moisture taking into account the convergence or divergence within a thin layer. Further modifications in the dynamical model are also suggested.

متن کاملTopographic and meteorological influences on spatial scaling of heavy convective rainfall in mountainous regions
Characterizing the spatial scaling and dynamics of convective precipitation in mountainous terrain and the development of downscaling methods to transfer precipitation fields from one scale to another is the overall motivation for this research. Substantial progress has been made on characterizing the space-time organization of midwestern convective systems and tropical rainfall, which has led ...
متن کاملSimulating orographic rainfall with a limited-area, non-hydrostatic atmospheric model under idealized forcing
A modified version of an operational 3dimensional, non-hydrostatic, limited-area atmospheric model (MM5) was used to perform high-resolution, idealized simulations of the interaction of an infinitely long single ridge with a steady, lateral large-scale wind field. The effect of different mountain ridge dimensions, wind speeds and patterns and moisture profiles on the quantity and distribution o...
متن کاملMoist Dynamics and Orographic Precipitation in Northern and Central California during the New Year’s Flood of 1997
The dynamics of moist orographic flows during the January 1997 floods in northern and central California are investigated using numerical simulations computed with the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). Early in the event (31 December 1996–1 January 1997), the low-level winds offshore of California’s central ...
متن کاملRain on small tropical islands
[1] A high‐resolution rainfall climatology based on observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission’s Precipitation Radar (PR) instrument is used to evaluate the influence of small tropical islands on climatological rainfall. Islands with areas between one hundred and several thousand km are considered in both the Indo‐Pacific Maritime Continent and Caribbean regions. Annual mean clim...
